Responsible Care

Responsible Care® is the chemistry industry's commitment to sustainability - the betterment of society, the environment and the economy. Its ethic and principles compel companies to innovate for safer and more environmentally friendly products and processes, and to work cooperatively to identify and eliminate harm throughout the entire life cycle of their products.

Responsible Care is our commitment to continuous improvement of all aspects of the chemistry industry's environmental, health and safety performance and to ensuring openness about its activities and its achievements.

Our members are expected to seek out your concerns and address them.

Responsible Care covers all aspects of a company's business, including environmental protection, resource conservation, occupational health and safety, process safety, research and development, transportation, product stewardship, purchasing, security and social responsibility. It requires engagement with plant-site neighbours, communities along transportation corridors, emergency responders, critics and advocates, as well as with governments at all levels, to advance laws and regulations in support of sustainability.

Launched in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (formerly the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association - CCPA), Responsible Care's rigorous ethic has spread to more than 50 countries around the world. The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada's member companies are widely recognized as global leaders in business responsibility.

In this section of the website, you'll find a wealth of information about Responsible Care, how it works and its benefits.

The company’s decision-making and actions are clearly underpinned by the
Responsible Care ethic. The overall management system was confirmed to be self-
healing, in that the process focussed on continual performance improvement through
identification of deficiencies and actions to correct them in a timely manner.

Not withstanding the above, the following findings requiring action were identified.
These will need to be followed-up with the CCPA Leadership Group in which the
company participates, the company’s established community advisory processes, the
annual executive contact recommitment to CCPA and in the next re-verification.

The new principles recently announced by the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association could herald a major step forward in the evolution of Responsible Care. The Responsible Care® Ethic & Principles for Sustainability broaden the scope of member company responsibilities and make it explicit that Responsible Care is the means by which the industry will progress toward sustainability. If effectively communicated, the new principles should make it clear to CCPA members and external stakeholders that Responsible Care and sustainability are now one and the same. read more...
