Chemical Producers Supports Industry Committee Report on Industrial Sectors

Ottawa, June 17, 2009 - Canada's Chemical Producers support the recommendations made by the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology Chaired by Michael Chong, MP. While there are many recommendations, it is worth noting the first two recommendations of the all-party committee:

  1. That the Government of Canada focus on establishing conditions that make Canadian businesses competitive around the world. In particular, this means establishing regulatory consistency and predictability, and keeping down the taxes paid by both Canadian consumers and businesses, including payroll taxes.

  2. That the Government of Canada, in order to preserve Canada's vital oil and gas, mining, and chemical production sectors, and to allow industries to better assess the resulting cost implications, establish a clear and predictable environmental regulatory framework that protects our natural environment, while ensuring a balanced approach for sectors that play a pivotal role in creating jobs and generating new economic opportunities for Canadians.

"This Committee is listening to industry and on the right track," said Richard Paton. "While our sector will continue to press for greater federal/provincial alignment and further improvements to our investment environment, clearly the Standing Committee recognizes how crucial it is that manufacturing emerge from the recession more globally competitive and strategically placed to compete and grow."

Canada's chemical producers have set a goal to be the most environmentally responsible resource upgraders in the world. To achieve this, we need all levels of government to work together with the objective of making the business and regulatory environment conducive to this goal.

CCPA is the principal voice of the Canadian industrial chemistry value chain. Canada’s basic chemicals and resins industry generates $27 billion annually, and is Ontario’s third largest exporter.
